As many will remember, Alex Haley was an award winning author who wrote the best-selling autobiography of Malcolm x and in 1976 the award winning story – “Roots: The Sage of an American Family”, which became a sensational mini-series for the ABC network in 1977 when it broke the record for any televised series capturing an audience of over 130 million viewers.

Mr. Ross’s documentary “Kunta Kinteh Island: Coming Home Without Shackles” is a true story about the descendants of Kunta Kinteh and the renaming of James Island off the coast of Gambia in West Africa in 2011. For decades, James Island had been a holding ground where captured Africans were interred on their way to slavery in the new world.

“In every conceivable manner, the family is link to our past, bridge to our future.”
-Alex Haley
